I apologize in advance because this is a much longer post than usual.
I was watching late night tv last night, and I saw a debate about faith with 4 panelists and an audience. Two panelists were christians, one was an authority on eastern philosophy, and one was some sort of cultish deviation of catholicism (I missed the first 5 minutes so I don’t know their names).
The debate was heated, but what it revealed most was the arrogance of the non-christian panelists. However “enlightened” they claimed to be, they appeared so foolish to claim that they don’t need Jesus becuase they have it all figured out. It was also interesting to see how much they look down on those of us that do acknowledge our need for salvation through Christ. They accuse us of being simple, stupid, and sheep.
It made me realize that, on one hand, salvation through Christ and a relationship with Him and experiencing His joy IS quite simple. On the other hand, there is some truth that accusation of being simple, stupid, and sheep.
Christ’s love for us is simple, but our failure to continually grow in our faith by taking it for granted is very stupid. Our laziness causes us to be sheep because it is easier to trust someone else’s spiritual leadership than to challenge our faith by diggin into God’s word and truly relying on Him on a daily basis. We are guilty to some degree of spiritual stupidity as christians because we aren’t growing deeper in our faith as we are called to. Rather, we too often seek entertainment on Sunday mornings at church to feel like we are at least doing something.
I hope I have insulted some of you, as I am insulted by realizing that I am guilty of the same thing. Satan is alive and active, and our lack of knowledge and faith can easily be attacked by his people seeking to convince others that a person would have to be stupid to “lean not on your own understanding, but in all ways acknowledge him, and he will direct your path.” Doing that takes faith, and faith comes from knowing God’s Word in a very personal way.
I thank Christ for this realization that I need to take the initiative to seek Christ more in my life, allow my faith to grow, and as a result, be a better soldier for Christ.
